Düsseldorf (energate) - The energy group Uniper is turning to a US supplier for its electrolysis technology. The company has signed an agreement with Plug Power for its hydrogen project in the Dutch port of Rotterdam. Under the agreement, Plug Power will supply ten PEM electrolysis modules for Uniper's Maasvlakte site, the two companies jointly announced. However, the deal is still conditional, as Uniper has not yet made its final investment decision. If this is positive, the 100 MW electrolysis plant should be operational by 2026, they said. It is expected to grow to 500 MW by 2030 (

Uniper says it chose plug technology because of its high degree of standardisation, reliability and flexibility. The American fuel cell supplier says it has 50 years of experience in PEM (proton exchange membrane) electrolysis. It has installed more than 50,000 fuel cell systems and more than 165 fueling stations. Plug Power, based in New York state, is also one of the largest consumers of hydrogen. In the US, the company plans to build a green hydrogen highway and a gigafactory to manufacture electrolysers and fuel cells. In addition, several green hydrogen production plants will be built to produce 500 tonnes of liquid green hydrogen per day by 2025. In Europe, the company is involved in a major H2 project in the port of Antwerp (
