A ramp-up of the hydrogen market is the most important response to the Ukraine war, according to a finding of the National Hydrogen Monitor. (Image: Bosch)
Essen (energate) - German companies see the rapid expansion of the hydrogen economy as the most important response to the war in Ukraine. This was the result of a survey of managers for the "national hydrogen monitor" by Metropole Ruhr, RWE and Thyssenkrupp, as announced by the Ruhr Regional Association (RVR). According to the survey, 63 per cent of the corporate leaders questioned believe that Germany should prioritise the use of hydrogen in order to reduce its dependence on oil and gas imports. This means that hydrogen is more important to the executives than a longer use of nuclear power (56.9%) and the expansion of solar and wind energy on land and at sea (48.9% and 35.7%, respectively). This is followed by energy saving (26.8%), the promotion of domestic gas reserves (26.5%), the expansion of biogas use (12.3%) and adherence to the coal phase-out in 2038 (12.5%).
There is a split opinion among the executives on the question of whether German industry can manage without Russian energy imports in the long term if more green hydrogen is imported and renewable electricity is generated. A total of 43.2 per cent of the respondents are optimistic. 28.7 per cent answer this question with "Yes, definitely" and 14.5 % with "Rather yes". In contrast, 28 per cent of the respondents answered with "No, definitely not", 16.5 per cent with "Rather no" and 9.7 per cent were undecided.
More security of supply and climate protection
"For decision-makers, industry is also by far the most important application area for hydrogen when it comes to strengthening security of supply and climate protection," the RVR says about the Hydrogen Monitor. 56.1 per cent of the respondents were of the opinion that hydrogen should be used primarily in this segment. In addition, hydrogen use in trucks has the most potential (42.1%). This is followed by electricity storage and shipping (both 34.2%) and heat generation for heating (30.9%). 26.6 per cent of the decision-makers surveyed assign the use of hydrogen in passenger cars an important role in security of supply and climate protection. This puts passenger cars ahead of buses (24.1%) and aircraft (16.1%) as a field of application. /df
